Fayetteville's newest top cop is sworn in

Friday was a historic night for the Fayetteville Police Department as the eighth police chief was sworn in. Bringing almost 30 years of experience to the city, Gina Hawkins took an emotional oath of office. It happened in front of family, close friends, members of the department, and her 98-year-old grandmother.

"I'm prepared and I don't want to let the city down, and I'm not going to let the city down. It feels amazing," said Hawkins. "I will fight for others more than I'll fight for myself."

Hawkins confessed her faith in God, love for her family, and commitment to serving the community. She says she's ready to take on her newest challenge.

"I need to identify what they are, listen to the community, and prioritize them," said Hawkins.

Her job is to oversee 400 law enforcement officers and a department budget of $54 million. She also knows her importance as a role model.

"Every little kid from my daughters," said Hawkins. "I stood on many shoulders. Now, I have broad shoulders for my people to stand on. I'm very, very proud to be a citizen of Fayetteville and the Chief of the police department."
