St. Augustine's University held its 84th commencement Saturday, and big smiles lit up the campus.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Big smiles lit up the campus of St. Augustine's University on this sunny Saturday.

Commencement is a time for celebration by those who've done the work required for their degrees and their happy relatives.

"It was a good journey from the day I dropped her off in the freshman dorm to the day she left, over in the senior dorm," said Phillis McMillan, the mother of a graduate.

On this day, there's a sense of pride, seen many times during the ceremony.

"Yes! I enjoyed my four years. It was great," said graduate Faith Davies.

From the recognition of 104-year-old Pauline Latta, who received an honorary degree, to the standing ovation received by St. Aug's track coach, who was a member of the class of 1965.

"Forty-five years of service to St. Augustine's, the winningest Olympic coach in the world. Let's give George Williams the Falcon round of applause that he deserves," said St. Augustine's President Dr. Everett Ward.

Now that the ceremony's over and the graduates face the so called real world with that inevitable question: "What do you do now that you've earned that degree?"

"I'm going to divinity school. I'm looking at Shaw right now," said Davies.

Other graduates can choose between more education and a job.

"I'm currently a free agent in the NFL, but I'm pursuing my time with the CFL in Canada," said graduate Michael Lima.

They all appear to face the future with confidence and now confirmation that the years spent studying can lead to the next step in their journey through life.
