CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- There's a new deadline for UNC as it prepares its response to the accreditation agency Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in the wake of the damaging Wainstein report on academic fraud.

The original deadline was Wednesday, Jan. 7. However, UNC now has until Jan. 12 to submit its response to the scathing letter sent by the SACS.

It's the second time that SACS has sent a warning letter to the school.

The agency says UNC was not diligent in providing information about the academic scandal, and that two UNC employees withheld information about the fraud.

SACS reviewed the Wainstein report and notified UNC in November of 18 accreditation standards which the university may have violated. The most damaging was a lack of "institutional integrity."

When UNC addresses the alleged violations, the SACS board will determine what happens next, which could be anything from probation to UNC losing its accreditation.
