Annual May March takes place in Durham
The Emily K Center held their annual May March on Thursday

DURHAM (WTVD) -- The Emily K Center, a nonprofit organization in Durham designed to help students in the community achieve academically and gain entry to college, will hold their annual May March to celebrate the program's graduates.

The May March takes place Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Emily K Center gymnasium. This is the fourth graduating class from the Emily K Center, made up of 15 seniors.

Nearly all of them will be the first in their families to go to college.

The May March celebrates all of the nonprofit's 200 students from grades 1-12. They come to the Emily K Center from 45 different schools in Durham County to be mentored and essentially break the cycle of poverty in their families.

The "K to College" program helps students from low-income families excel in school, get into college, and graduate with a degree.

Duke men's basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his wife Mickie founded the center nine years ago in honor of Coach K's mother, Emily. She never went to high school.

Thursday evening, Coach K will give the keynote speech.

The Emily Center has mentored more than 1500 students since it started, including Brittany Lambright.

Lambright is the center's first college graduate, finishing in just three years with a B.A. from East Carolina University.

She returned for the ceremony tonight and says none of her success would be possible without this program.
