Governor McCrory takes questions at NCCU
DURHAM, NC (WTVD) -- A receptive crowd of students, staff and administrators watched Governor Pat McCrory's dialogue with North Carolina Central University chancellor Debra Saunders-White Tuesday morning, as the two discussed ways Central can play a bigger role in the marketing of this state.
The governor took no questions from the media during his appearance at Central, but he frequently mentioned the need for North Carolina universities other than the flagship schools to improve their facilities for the 21st century. He urged support for a bond that goes before the voters on March 15 that includes about $30 million earmarked for the design and construction of a new business school.
"The entrepreneurs are coming out of NC Central," said McCrory. "I'm talking about the next Bill Gates."
Chancellor Saunders-White spoke about the need to get students up to speed for the challenges posed by a fast-moving, evolving business world.
"What we have to be able to do is change the conversation from what do you want to major in," asked the chancellor, "to what effect do you want to have on society?"
NCCU is mentioned as an asset for businesses considering a move to North Carolina according to McCrory, who said when pitching the larger, well known public and private schools that define the Research Triangle, he also mentions smaller universities like Central that are training potential members of a skilled work force.
While there, McCrory signed a proclamation designating February as Black History Month.
