100 years ago today, the world changed forever with the start of World War I. What started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria escalated into the deadliest global conflict ever seen in the world at that time, with more than 9 million deaths.

Involving all of the great economic and political powers on the globe, World War I laid the foundation for WWII, and in process, the framework for our current societal, economic and geopolitical landscape. Check out these images of the war that would forever change the world.
