CUMBERLAND COUNTY (WTVD) -- ABC11 is highlighting the good deeds of the community as the Cumberland County Register of Deeds comes together to help homeless schoolchildren.

Tuesday, the Register of Deeds' Office donated 800 backpacks to Cumberland County Schools and the Fayetteville Police Department.

According to the Cumberland County School System, there are 600 homeless children in the county.

"We have so many additional homeless students as a result of Matthew and the backpacks help fill in some of the physical needs students have," said Interim Superintendent Tim Kinlaw.

New police chief Gina Hawkins admits she was startled and hurt by the statistic.

Her officers joined forces with the county to ensure all children have equal access to the tools they need to succeed.

"Our goal is to minimize the homeless that are out there, but our goal for the day is to minimize how many backpacks we need to produce," said Hawkins.

The backpacks were packed as part of the Register of Deeds' annual school supply drive and will be distributed to homeless school children in Cumberland County by the school system and Fayetteville Police.
