St. Aug's to cut jobs and furlough workers
The financially struggling university is restructuring to save money.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- St. Augustine's University Interim President Everett Ward said Thursday the school will lay off some workers and furlough others in an attempt to put the college on a stronger financial footing.

Ward said the university will cut about 4 percent of its total workforce and move some personnel from a 12-month schedule to 10 months.

There will be a week-long furlough after summer school from July 7-12 for all employees, except essential personnel such as campus security.

The cutbacks should save the school about $360,000 right away and will have a long-term cost savings of approximately $680,000- for a total savings of little more than $1 million.

"Although we have identified other areas to improve our financial efficiency without compromising the needs of our students, the personnel decisions were necessary as these expenses represent the largest part of the university's annual budget," said Ward.
