Wake County Schools looking for ways to fill $17.5M shortfall
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Wake County School Board members will have to make tough decisions in the coming weeks as they work to fill a multi-million dollar budget gap. The district has a $17.5 million shortfall.
Officials are recommending a number of things to fill the hole such as reducing the transportation budget, reducing custodial services to two days a week, freezing or postponing vacancies, and adjusting teacher funding allotments for elementary and middle schools.
Teachers and certified staff will receive the pay raises included in the state budget.
Board member Kevin Hill said he's frustrated with the cuts and told ABC11 they will put its District in a finicky bind.
"This will have a direct impact on every single classroom and every teacher or teaching professional in every schools," said Hill "This shouldn't acceptable."
Board members will have a month to mull over the recommendations and will vote on the budget in August.
The district is now operating on an interim budget.
