Wake County breaks ground on new high school
Green Level High School will be built in the west Cary area

CARY, NC (WTVD) -- The state's largest school district continues to get bigger and that means Wake County's need for new schools is growing as well.

On Thursday, Wake County leaders and members of the Wake County Board of Education broke ground on Green Level High School off Roberts Road in west Cary.

The $79.5 million project will eventually serve more than 2,200 students.

"It's a very exciting day to be starting the process of getting a new high school," said school board member Susan Evans, moments after taking part in the groundbreaking ceremony.

Green Level High will open in 2017, acting as a swing space for Apex High School while that building is renovated. Then in 2018, its own students will move in.

"We're going to be crowded right to the point when we open this thing," said Brian Conklin, WCPSS Senior Facilities Director.

Conklin and Evans said the board is collaborating with county commissioners, already planning for how they'll stay ahead of Wake County's constant growth and the need for new facilities.

"We're always playing catchup, have been for the last 25 years as the growth continues to come," said Evans. "And there will continue to be growth so this will meet a large part of the need, but there will still be some building and there will still be some new folks coming."

When it opens, Green Level High School will operate on a traditional calendar.
