Hollywood casts Clayton mayor and his mom in ads for new show

CLAYTON, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Heck, Yeah! That's what Clayton Mayor Jody McLeod said when Hollywood producers called him up asking him and his mother to appear in some promotional commercials for the new ABC comedy, The Mayor.

McLeod's first question was,"How did you get up with me?"

Turns out, the mayor's YouTube videos 'Spotlight on Clayton' led to the calls. Producers said they were looking for a few mayors across the country to help out in the ads and McLeod made the shortlist after they discovered them on YouTube.

The videos feature Mayor McLeod highlighting issues around Clayton, and from time to time McLeod's opinionated and feisty (in a very good way) mother, Mavorine, can make an appearance. She's better known around town as Mamma Mayor.

"If you don't want to know, don't ask me," Mamma Mayor explained. "And, if you do want to know you don't have to ask me I'll tell you anyway!"

Mayor McLeod says his mom has always been his biggest fan since he ran for office 13 years ago and sharing this experience with her was the icing on the cake. He is excited not only to appear in the ads - he's getting calls from mayors across the country asking if he will actually be acting in the show.

"I'm like I'm hoping to get a cameo appearance I'm for sure the character is going to need coaching," said McLeod.

Mamma Mayor says never say never.

"I'm available!" she said.

Mayor McLeod says he is excited for the show to highlight local government.

"I'm really thrilled the ABC network has chosen to highlight what it is like to be a chosen elected official," McLeod said. "In North Carolina, just this week the North Carolina League of Municipalities established the first North Carolina Mayors Association. So, it doesn't matter if you're in a big city or small town, we found out local government is the best form of government," McLeod said.

The Mayor airs Tuesdays at 9:30 pm on ABC11.
