Free tax prep offered across North Carolina
Tax day is April 18 and if you still need to file your taxes, there are a few programs offering free help including the AARP Tax-Aide Program which has a location at the Bond Park Community Center in Cary.
"At this site, we have half of our people are actually CPAs, and we have 25 tax counselors," explained Gary Olhoft, Coordinator for the AARP Tax-Aide Cary location.
"We have close to 40 people here, all volunteers," he said.
Olhoft says the AARP program does not have age restrictions for tax help, but, volunteers are limited to filing returns for each state.
"We're pretty much limited to North Carolina," Olhoft said.
"We are only restricted into doing the returns we are trained for. So, we can handle a lot of different returns," he said.
The AARP Tax-Aide Program is nationwide.
The IRS also offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program offering free tax help for people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited
English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues
unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
