Troubleshooter Consumer Alert: Duke Pay Raise Scam
The scam comes as a simple email that appears incredibly legitimate. It appears to be from Duke Human Resources.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- The Troubleshooter report reveals a pay raise scam that is affecting Duke employees.

The scam comes as a simple email that appears incredibly legitimate. It appears to be from Duke Human Resources.

The email states the university is having a salary increment program again this year with an average of 2.5-percent.

The email goes on to say the HR department is evaluating you for a raise in your next paycheck.

All you have to do is click on the link to confirm and access your salary revision documents.

That is where you can tell it is a scam.

Even though you will see www.duke.edu as part of the URL, a rep with Duke's IT security team tells us the initial domain portion points you to a Russian server as opposed to Duke's.

If you click on the link, it takes you to a page which looks almost just like the Duke login page.

The difference however, is that the scam page wants your bank account information. A sure sign it is a scam.

Due to the scam, a rep with Duke's IT security team recommends that all Duke users set-up a multi-factor authentication on their account.

This includes security measures such as USB keys - a USB device that generates a password or can call your cell phone for additional verification.

Another red flag is when you're asked for information you typically don't type in, like your bank account number.
