Cool for Wake program now in effect
Wake County's seasonal Cool For Wake program helps vulnerable in oppressive heat.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- As central North Carolina is blanketed with oppressive and record-breaking temperatures, the seasonal "Cool For Wake" program is underway to help get free fans and AC units into the homes of the most vulnerable citizens.

Cool For Wake runs May 1 through mid September through the county's human services division.

To qualify for a fan, you need to be a resident of Wake County and live in a home without air conditioning with someone over the age of 60 or under 12.

There is also a new addition to Cool For Wake that provides wall AC units to those with a documented health issue.

"We have a great partner with the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors who generously provide wall unit air conditioners for those residents who are medically fragile," explained Denise Kissel, the Resource Development Coordinator for Wake Co. Human Services who oversees Cool For Wake.

"If they have a health condition and the fan is not enough, and they need to be in a more controlled climate, then we can provide them with a small window unit air conditioner," Kissel said.

A doctors note is required for the wall unit.
