Workout tips for moms
As the new school year begins, Caitlin Knute shares a few tips for moms looking to get in shape.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- It's back-to-school for many area kids this week. While this might mean your life is about to get even busier, it could be the perfect opportunity to work in some time to get in shape.

At least that's what fitness instructor Erin Studdard of Burn Boot Camp in Durham is suggesting. She breaks down the how and why in these 5 simple steps:

1. PLAN AHEAD

First Studdard said to use the start of school as springboard to build in time for workouts. Just like you're making adjustments in your daily routine to get the kids to school, sports, or other extracurricular activities, try to pencil in some time for you and then make that a priority.

"Our children have to get off to school and we can use that as an excuse. But, it can also be used as a tool to plan ahead," Studdard said. "The decision is always up to you. It's making a sacrifice in another area, but it's for your health, and I think that's the most important thing because you can't be your best for your family if you don't take care of yourself."

2. FIND A WORKOUT THAT MAXIMIZES YOUR TIME

Studdard's Boot Camp class is only 45 minutes, but is a high-intensity workout that incorporates strength-training, cardio, core, and endurance.

"These classes work because in those 45 minutes you're working the entire time through the workout. We are constantly challenging our camper. If they hit a certain level we always push them to go just a little farther," Studdard explains.

3. CHOOSE A GROUP FITNESS CLASS WITH TRAINED INSTRUCTORS

This allows you the benefit of having personal trainer without the cost, as instructors can help you modify moves as needed. By working out in a group environment you're not just more likely to work harder, you're less likely to skip class.

"Accountability, accountability and community," stated Studdard. "If you go to the gym or if you're at home, if you're a woman, you see a weight room and you just walk away. Or you go to the gym and you pick up a 5 or 8 pound dumbbell, and you never push yourself past that point. In here they're challenged every day to push themselves just a little harder."

4. LOOK FOR A GYM/WORKOUT CLASS THAT OFFERS CHILDCARE

This way if you can't leave the kids at home or with another parent or caretaker, that's not an excuse to miss your workout. For example, Burn Boot Camp has free childcare for class members.

5. WORKOUT AT HOME BY "PLAYING"

If you do miss a workout, don't underestimate the power of play.

As Studdard explains, you can exercise just by playing with your kids. That includes burning up 120 calories by jumping rope for just 10 minutes. Or you can burn 450 calories by taking the family on a 45 minute bike ride.

Simply playing on playground with your children for half an hour can burn up to 300 calories.

And if outdoor activities are out for whatever reason, you can also do this quick workout at home (or even in your office at work)
