Free prostate screening in Durham this weekend

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Calling all men! If you're between the ages of 45 and 75, you are due for a prostate screening. This weekend, you have a chance to get one for free.

The free event also screens for diabetes, hypertension, and more.

Here are details:

Saturday, Sept. 19, 8 a.m.-noon

Lincoln Community Health Center

1301 Fayetteville St, Durham, N.C.

Sunday, Sept. 20, noon to 4 p.m.

Duke Clinic

40 Duke Medicine Circle, Durham, N.C.

The event is all thanks to a partnership between Duke Cancer Institute and the Lincoln Community Health Center.

Doctors say these screenings are important for all men, especially African Americans who are not only more likely to have prostate cancer, but actually have a higher rate of dying from the disease. Doctors say this can be avoided through early detection.

If you have an abnormal test result this weekend, Duke utilizes what are called "Patient Navigators," who can help you determine what your next step should be. They can also help walk you through the process, including assisting those without health insurance.
