EMS busy in the stifling heat
Over the summer, EMS answers all kinds of calls, from people out for a walk or a jog who've overdone it, to heat related calls for people with underlying medical conditions.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Officials want folks who are young and fit to pay careful attention. Even those in tip-top shape are not always immune to the effects of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Over the summer, EMS answers all kinds of calls, from people out for a walk or a jog who've overdone it, to heat related calls for people with underlying medical conditions.

That's why emergency responders are warning everyone to take preventative steps such as staying hydrated. It's sound advice for people as well as pets.

Another tip from EMS crews -- limit your time outside. However, if you have to be outside, be sure to take breaks as needed.

Finally, if you notice symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or you suddenly stop sweating, get help immediately.

If it's not that severe, EMS crews recommend getting to a cool place, drinking fluids, and trying to cool down by placing a cold washcloth, ice or even pouring some cold water over pulse points.
