Long Island City gym focuses on CrossFit for kids
Lauren Glassberg has the details.

LONG ISLAND CITY -- You might have noticed CrossFit gyms popping up all over the place. The high intensity workouts focus on strength and conditioning for adults, but now kids are taking part as well.

"I was like, what if your kids could have this and the impact at a younger age?" says Michele Kelber.

That is how Kelber started teaching CrossFit for kids. She has the only dedicated CrossFit for kids gym on the East Coast, located in Long Island City.

For the 3-5-year-olds, the moves often mimic animals, and there are plenty of games. Like adult CrossFit classes, kids work on full range of motion, form, mechanics and consistency. However, unlike the adult classes, there is no emphasis on intensity - instead, the emphasis is on fun.

6-10-year-olds run around lots, but their 45-minute sessions are a little more structured.

"They come in and they know we do a warm up and skill session," says Kelber.

Those skill sessions help some of their other sports - like swimming.

Others may not like team sports, so CrossFit is their big activity, and in some cases it is a family workout.
