FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A Fayetteville businessman is giving away thousands of dollars to help a local nonprofit.

Jerry McDonald, owner of Only N Door, was so touched by retired ABC11 anchor Larry Stogner's fight against ALS after a recent trip to Washington that he decided to take action himself.

McDonald designed an ad to spread awareness about the disease.

That ad is now running on 10 digital billboards inside Triangle Town Center and locations in Fayetteville and Winston-Salem.

"I grew up in Raleigh watching ABC11 and Larry Stogner and definitely he touched a lot of people's lives when he stepped down due to ALS. It was just a no-brainer for us," said McDonald. "It's such a challenging thing to have to go through as an individual knowing what you face is ahead and still going out there and fighting for ALS. I wanted to be able to support that."

Over the next year, McDonald will donate $25,000 in free advertising to the ALS Association-Jim Catfish Hunter Chapter.

"It's amazing because awareness is everything," said chapter president Jerry Dawson. "Money's always tight so you want your money to go to the mission as much as possible."

Dawson said the ads will free up valuable resources to run local ALS clinics.

"I never knew that that relationship could generate this kind of generosity. It just really gets to me that I have had or could have that kind of impact," said Stogner.
