Weight loss becomes business for Boot Camp Moms

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A couple of moms used their own success shedding pregnancy pounds to start a business helping other women.

Good friends Kyle Furlow and Jen Pinder are the co-founders of the group Boot Camp Moms. They came up with the idea after they both had children and weren't happy with how they looked.

"I caught my reflection in the side of a window of a car, and I was in maternity pants, but I was not pregnant," explained Jen. "And I looked and I said, 'How the heck did this happen?'"

Jen and Kyle started working out together, and within a year their hard work paid off.

"It took a year, but after a year, we lost 100 pounds, and what we did was we worked out every morning at 5:45 and we were accountable to each other. So if you don't go out in the driveway at 5:45 you're not going to be friends anymore," Jen joked.

And from there, the two set out to help other women build a network of workout buddies. Their boot camp classes meet in Raleigh four times a week. And while they have a definite appeal for fellow moms, they're open to all women, from brides-to-be to grandmothers.

"We do a lot of intervals. We do 30 seconds of a high-intensity workout -- 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off -- lots of different circuits, so you're running around. We have lots of different equipment that we bring. We keep it fun," Kyle explained.

And as moms, they understand it's not always easy to get out of the house and come to their workouts. So, if that doesn't work for your schedule, there's always the option of joining their taped workouts online.

It's options like that which keep the many regulars in the small, personal fitness classes coming back, including Cathy Bond. She managed to lose 60 pounds in two years working out with the group. But for her, the results go beyond just the physical.

"I don't think about the weight I lost. I think about the things I've gained because of it. My 11-year-old daughter told me I was her guru the other day. She said, 'Mom, I have two gurus, my basketball coach for basketball and you for fitness,'" Cathy shared.

And for Kyle and Jen, making women feel better about themselves is what their hard work is all about. You can sign up to try their classes for free for 30 days and then you can pay per class at only $8 per boot camp session.
