Sanford man dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say.

SANFORD, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Sanford Police responded Thursday to a report of a man with a gun in the downtown area.

The incident happened at Charlotte Avenue and First Street. Police found the armed man sitting in front of a business.

Police said they communicated with the 28-year-old man for about 90 minutes before the man used a handgun to shoot himself.

He was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where he died of the single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed officers and firefighters at the intersection and an area roped off with crime tape and clearing the scene.

There was no further information from police.
