DURHAM (WTVD) -- Police say a shooting Wednesday night near Hillside High School in Durham happened during a shoe sale.

Investigators said that about 9 p.m. a 20-year-old came to a parking lot at the Caroco gas station at 3700 Fayetteville Road near Cook Road, across from the school to sell some shoes.

Two people who were going to buy the shoes got in the backseat of his vehicle. As they were making the transaction, a black car pulled up behind them and two men got out and approached the car the victim was in. The victim was shot and all four men fled in the black car.

The victim - who police have not identified - was taken to Duke University Hospital.

Recent violence in the Bull City - two murders so far this year and 42 killings last year - has prompted members of the community to come together for a candlelight vigil at City Hall Plaza at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
