Police with the Homicide Unit said Thursday night that the results of the autopsy completed on Byrd showed that he died as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.

Boyd, 23, an acquaintance of Byrd's, is not in custody. He may still be driving a black, 2012 Ford Focus, bearing North Carolina license plate BLR-2895.

The 37-year-old Byrd was paralyzed from a car accident more than two decades ago, and his body was discovered earlier this week in the wood line along Shaw Mill Road and Meharry Drive.

Byrd's family members said he was last seen around his Hawthorne Road home Saturday evening. He'd spent the night enjoying friends and family in the home he shared with his mother, but his sister said he got into a car with Boyd and was never seen alive again.
