Truck crashes on Alligator River Bridge
Strong winds may have pushed the truck over.

MANTEO, NC (WTVD) -- The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a truck flipped on its side on the Alligator River Bridge on the way to the Outer Banks just after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Troopers said the truck was headed west on US 64 when it lost control and landed on its side, partially dangling over the edge.

There was strong wind in the area at the time, and troopers said that could have caused the wreck. The Outer Banks Voice said the crash happened as thunderstorms moved through with wind gusts over 70 mph.

A small amount of diesel fuel leaked from the truck into the river.

Highway 64 was shut down while the truck was removed.
