Durham police arrest man in drive-by shooting that injured toddler
DURHAM (WTVD) -- A Durham man was arrested Friday night and charged in the shooting of a toddler during a drive-by shooting Tuesday afternoon on Great Bend Drive.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force and the Durham Police Department arrested Marion Lacount Laney, 26, on North Creek Drive.
On Tuesday, shortly before 3 p.m., officers responded to a shooting on Great Bend Drive. When they arrived, they found a 1 1/2-year-old boy who had been shot inside the house. The child was taken to Duke Hospital for treatment and has since been released.
Officers were told that numerous shots were fired by the occupants of a dark-colored sedan.
Bullet holes could still be seen in the home Wednesday as neighbors described the frightening moments when bullets were flying from a dark Honda sedan.
"He had a hoodie over his head and something over his face," one neighbor said about the suspected gunman. "The guy emptied the gun, he got back into the car and they pulled off, and went on up Lime Street."
The shooting happened at a home that also serves as Monica Tatum's business, Christian Child Care, on the corner of Great Bend Drive and Lime Street. Three children were inside Tuesday when the shots went through the wall. The day care is shut down indefinitely.
Laney is charged with one count of discharging a firearm into occupied property inflicting serious injury, one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of injury to property and one count of discharging a firearm within the city limits.
He is being held at the Durham County Jail under a $1.5 million bond.
The toddler was not the intended victim, according to investigators, but the shooting does not appear to have been a random incident.
