A Durham school teacher just won a Grammy.

He was sitting in the middle of John Legend and Lady Gaga, but once people realized who he was - they wanted to talk to him. Why? Because a music superstar wouldn't be where they are without a great music teacher.

Phillip Riggs teaches music at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. He's taught middle and high school bands and choirs all over the state for decades.

But Riggs doesn't just teach kids how to carry a tune. He uses music to teach them how to be better people...and he doesn't stop when class is over.

He also devotes his time to helping new band teachers; he even started a mentorship program. Out of 4,500 nominations from 50 states, the Grammy Foundation picked Riggs as the best music educator in the country.

Here's how to nominate a music teacher

To celebrate Riggs' achievement, Disney Performing Arts' annual series of Festival Disney competitions will honor him in Walt Disney World.
