WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- A serious crash on Interstate 540 caused gridlock during the Friday morning commute.

Several lanes of I-540 were closed in both directions near Lumley Road in Raleigh due to an accident in the median.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. along the left two eastbound lanes and the left two westbound lanes at exit 3.

According to police, 31-year-old Ryan Timberlake was driving an Isuzu box truck west on I-540 when he merged into the adjoining travel lane, striking a Chevy Express van.

The Chevy van, driven by 59-year-old Eugeino Garcia Navarro, crossed over the center guard wire into the eastbound lanes of I-540. The box truck flipped and came to rest against the center guard wire, police said.

Timberland, Navarro, and one of Navarro's passengers were all taken to Duke Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Two other passengers of Navarro's van were taken to WakeMed where they were treated and released.

Police are still investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.
