Two WWII veterans visited a Cary school on Friday

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- World War II veterans John "Jack" Sherman, 92, and Jack MacNaughton, 91, spoke to fifth graders at Cary Christian School Friday morning.

The special assembly came about thanks to student Ian Fischer and his dad, David, who is a doctor.

Ian enthusiastically told his dad he was learning about World War II, and David thought it would be a good idea to invite the World War II heroes, who are his patients, to speak to the school.

"It's been a really good experience hearing them talk," 10-year-old Ian said. "I was really honored."

The students laughed at the veterans' jokes and learned firsthand experiences about World War II.

"Two showers in 70 days," said Sherman, who shared pictures and memories from serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He also spoke briefly about the concentration camps.

"It did happen," Sherman said. "It happened."

MacNaughton was part of the D-Day invasion. He showed the class the helmet he wore during the invasion.

"Personally, I can touch a few things that aren't in textbooks," MacNaughton said.
