Serious crash in Durham County
Emergency responders were on scene at Barbee Road in Durham County

DURHAM (WTVD) -- One person is dead after crashing in an area that residents nearby describe as dangerous.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Durham police officers responded to a crash near the intersection of Barbee Road and Hunters Lane. When they arrived on the scene they found a 2008 BMW 350i had crashed into a cluster of trees and the person inside was dead.

Late Wednesday night, police identified the victim as Gamaliel Gallegos-Gonzalez, 18, of Durham.

Police said the car ran off the left side of Barbee Road and overturned.

Residents said the speed limit on that stretch of Barbee Road is 35 mph but say people often go faster.

Speed appeared to be a factor, investigators said.

Neighbors did not want to share their names, but they described the area as "tricky" to ABC11.

Residents also said there was a car accident in that spot just a few months ago.

They also said as you turn the corner near that intersection, depending on the time of day, it can turn into a "blind corner" with the sun's glare.

ABC11 is working to get an accident history report from police for that stretch of road.

The accident remains under investigation.
