Rescuers worked to free occupants of a car that hit a pole on Angier Avenue in Durham.

A Durham man has been charged in a two-vehicle accident that happened Wednesday evening on Angier Avenue at Guthrie Avenue in Durham.

It happened about 7:20 p.m. Investigators said Thursday that David H. Barnes II of Durham was driving south on Guthrie Avenue when he ran a stop sign at Angier Avenue and lost control of his car.

His vehicle hit a utility pole and then bounced off the pole and struck an eastbound vehicle (on Angier) driven by Murial Higgins of Durham.

Barnes and his passenger, Kimberly Ross of Durham, were trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated.

Barnes, Ross and Higgins were hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Barnes was charged with driving while impaired, driving while his license was revoked, careless and reckless driving, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.

The incident shut down Angier Avenue from Briggs to Driver for several hours.
