Authorities investigate fatal crash in Wake County

WAKE COUNTY (WTVD) -- A man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Wake County early Sunday morning.

Authorities said it happened around 3 a.m. on I-40 east near Raleigh, at MM 309.

Jay Kelly Frazee, 23, of Dunn, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on the highway when he careened off the right side of the roadway. Highway Patrol said the SUV went through the shoulder guardrail before striking an embankment, where it overturned.

The SUV then struck a highway sign's support pole before coming to a rest on the right side of I-40 east, troopers said.

Frazee died on impact.

Two other people were injured, authorities said. Kyle Strickland, 22, and Austin Phillips, 20, were taken to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries. Both Strickland and Phillips are from Coatsberry Village Court in Coats, N.C.

Troopers said alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.
