WARREN COUNTY (WTVD) -- The State Highway Patrol says three people, including a child, were killed in a two vehicle head-on collision in Warren County near Warrenton on Monday.

It happened about 6:15 a.m. on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Troopers say Desmond Cornelius Roberts, 26, was driving a 2013 Honda CRV going east and went across the center line into a 2003 Honda Accord going west driven by Brittany Nicole Silver, 29.

They crashed head-on. Roberts had two children in the backseat, Joshua Roberts, 5, and Anthony Roberts Jr., 7. Desmond and Joshua Roberts were both killed along with Silver. Anthony was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Duke.

Troopers say both children were properly restrained.

According to authorities, it's unclear why Roberts drifted into the other lane. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Desmond Roberts played offensive line for N.C. State, redshirting his freshman season in 2007 and played sparingly in 2008, his sophomore season. He subsequently transferred to Fayetteville State University, where he played two seasons, making seven starts as a senior in 2012.

Roberts played at Northampton West High School, where he was rated as one of the best prep centers in the nation by Rivals.com
