FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Friday is National Nurse-In Day, and breastfeeding moms are out in public. They hope to raise awareness that breastfeeding is nothing to be embarrassed about.

A group of nursing moms and their children met at Festival Park in Fayetteville to talk about breastfeeding in public.

Several moms said they, or someone they know, had been asked to leave a business of to stop feeding their child. State and federal laws say it's fine for a mom to nurse her child in public, but these moms say not everyone is comfortable with that.

"I was breastfeeding my newborn. She was around a month old at the time, and a woman walked past me and complimented my child," said Erin Votaw. "Then she told me I should cover up more, because I was making people uncomfortable."

The moms said get-togethers like this one are planned across the state and nation Friday.
