I-40 West shut down due to accident
A 5-car wreck shut down the Interstate Saturday evening

GARNER, N.C. (WTVD) -- I-40 West was shut down at US-70 Business Saturday evening due to an accident around 7 p.m. An ABC11 viewer sent in a photo showing multiple cars were involved.

The Highway Patrol says five vehicles were involved in the crash, completely blocking the westbound lanes of I-40.

Witnesses say a silver Volkswagen Jetta going east on I-40 went into the median and hit the cable barrier. The car crossed into the westbound lanes and hit 4 other vehicles

Three people were taken to local hospitals including the driver of the Jetta.

Traffic was diverted off the interstate at exit 306B. One eastbound lane was also blocked for a short time. All lanes of I-40 reopened around 8:30 p.m.

Charges are pending, according to troopers.
