Duke Chapel reopened Wednesday (WTVD)

After being closed for a year, Duke University reopened the doors to the renovated Duke Chapel Wednesday.

Repair work closed the iconic Gothic-style structure last May.

The closing became necessary after a small piece of ceiling tile fell down in 2012, which led to the restoration.

Workers refurbished the ceiling and replaced the building's lead-coated copper roof. Crews also upgraded the electrical system and made other infrastructure improvements. Total cost of the work was about $19 million.

The dean of the chapel and Duke University President Richard Brodhead spoke at the event.

"It's a safer place and the restoration work has restored it back to its original beauty, as if we're back in the 1930s," said Duke Chapel Dean Luke Powery.
