Fire damages historic Middleburg steakhouse

MIDDLEBURG, N.C. (WTVD) -- A kitchen fire damaged a historic Middleburg restaurant on Saturday night, fire officials said.

Middleburg Steak and Seafood on Broad Street caught fire around 8:30 p.m., officials told ABC11. The fire was contained to the kitchen and the attic. Firefighters were on scene until 1 a.m., authorities said.

It is not known how badly the building is damaged or if the restaurant will reopen.

Chief of Drewry Fire Department Charles Holtzman said although the building is very old, the restaurant was still in operation.

Holtzman also noted the restaurant was originally a community house. According to Henderson Dispatch, the building was erected in 1934 as part of the Civil Work Administration, a program established by the New Deal during the Great Depression under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
