Man charged with driving wrong way on Raleigh Beltline

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Raleigh man is in jail for allegedly driving the wrong way down the Raleigh Beltline.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a trooper exited I-440 West at Wake Forest Road. As the trooper was going down the exit ramp, a burgundy 2005 Chevy Tahoe sideswiped him as the SUV was going up the exit ramp.

Per NCHP policy, troopers are not allow to chase a vehicle the wrong way down the highway. Law enforcement in the area was notified of the Tahoe going the wrong way. The SUV driver exited the highway about five miles later at Lake Boone Trail. He was immediately cornered and apprehended.

Clifton Keith Jeffries, 56, of Newell Lane in Raleigh, was charged with DWI and reckless driving. Jeffries is currently in the Wake County jail.
