Deadly crash in I95 NB
A deadly crash on I-95 northbound caused major traffic delays

SMITHFIELD (WTVD) -- Authorities confirm one person was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 north, just south of Smithfield.

It happened at 4:36 p.m. near mile marker 92 in Johnston County. Authorities said a silver Hyundai traveling north on I-95 ran off the road and crashed into a tree.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said a witness told them a white passenger car, possibly a 2013 or 2014 model Nissan with Florida tags, was driving at a high rate of speed when it moved to the left lane to pass, then back into the right lane.

The driver of the Hyundai swerved to the right to avoid the car, went off the road and hit the tree.

The driver died at the scene. DPS identified her as Wilma Jean Lewis, 63, of Fayetteville.

The white car did not stop.

There were major delays on I-95 northbound while authorities investigated the crash, but all lanes have since reopened.
