RALEIGH (WTVD) -- N.C. State's football team will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first game in Carter-Finley Stadium this upcoming season with throwback uniforms that date to the 1980s.

For the Oct. 8 game vs. Notre Dame, Dave Doeren's Wolfpack will wear the throwbacks, with a red diamond logo on a white helmet.

Former head coach Dick Sheridan introduced the diamond logo in 1986, his first year as Wolfpack coach, bringing the concept with him from Furman University.

State wore that helmet for the next 14 seasons, until going back to the traditional Block S in 2000.

"It's a special year as we honor Carter-Finley's 50th anniversary," Doeren said. "To recognize our proud tradition, we have brought back the diamond logo and uniform."

The football stadium originally opened as Carter Stadium in 1966, with the name honoring Wilbert James (Nick) Carter and his brother Harry Clifton Carter, both NC State graduates and major contributors to the stadium's completion.

The Finley name was added in 1979 for Albert Earle Finley, who did not attend NC State but was also a strong supporter of the Wolfpack's athletics program
