Stranger raises thousands for Tennessee teen who helped him with groceries

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Tennessee teen who offered to help a stranger with his groceries in exchange for food is now receiving the man's gratitude in a big way.

Chauncy Black, 16, went up to stranger Matthew Michael White while they were at a Memphis Kroger.

"Something told me to go up there - I guess faith told me to go up there - to ask this guy, 'can I help take his groceries to the car?'" the teen said.

White then bought Chauncy donuts for dinner and said he felt compelled to take the teen on a shopping spree. He learned that Chauncy is a straight A student who does odd jobs to support his sick mother, reports WHBQ-TV.

But when White dropped Chauncy off at home, he was brought to tears by what he saw - they had nothing.

"I just felt this overwhelming humility for his situation," White said.

White wrote about his meeting with Chauncy on Facebook and started a GoFundMe page to help him out. After he posted a video of the things Chauncy has missed out on, the internet fell in love with the soft-spoken, good-hearted teen who'd never had a chance.

In just two weeks, more than $90,000 was raised on the account.

White then gave Chauncy and his mother, Barbara Martin, the most amazing news - they could get a home.

"I don't know what to say. I don't know what to do. Chauncy told me not to cry, but I don't know, I might break down in tears," Barbara said.

While Chauncy said an angel saved him and his mother, White said it's the other way around.

"It's like a whole new purpose in life," he said.
