SMITHFIELD, NC (WTVD) --A Smithfield woman has been arrested after bruises were allegedly found on a 2-year-old girl.
Rachel Amber Thomas, 30, of Banks Street, was charged Friday with misdemeanor child abuse after bruises were found on the child.
The Department of Social Services contacted Johnston County deputies about the incident last Thursday, deputies said.
On Friday night, Smithfield Police arrested Thomas on an outstanding warrant from the sheriff's office charging her with a single count of child abuse.
Thomas was released on a $1,000 bond. She has an Aug. 29 court appearance.
Because of an inaccurate news release from the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, an earlier version of this story contained incorrect information describing the victim as a 10-year-old boy who allegedly had hot sauce poured in his mouth. Those details are from an unrelated case.
On Monday evening, ABC11 reached out to the sheriff's office for clarification, and a spokesperson for the sheriff's office confirmed to ABC11 that Thomas' case involved only a 2-year-old girl with bruises and that Thomas does not have a 10-year-child. The spokesperson said the hot-sauce incident is from another, unrelated case, and that there have not yet been charges filed in that case.
FURTHER UPDATE: At 10:07 p.m. Monday evening, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office released a statement further clarifying the circumstances surrounding Thomas' case:
Information was previously released and published which did not accurately identify the offense conduct of a person charged, Rachel Amber Thomas.
The correct information is as follows:
On 05-22-2016 a deputy with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office received information from a nurse at Wake Medical Center after observing bruising and swelling of a 2 year old child's buttocks. Information received stated the alleged abuse occurred at an address in Johnston County. Through further investigation it was discovered the juvenile was in the care of Rachel Amber Thomas when the alleged abuse occurred. During the investigation by detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office and review of the evidence by the Johnston County District Attorney's Office, Rachel Amber Thomas, 30 years of age of Smithfield was charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse.
