Deputies in Northampton County shot and killed a Pleasant Hill, N.C. man during a confrontation Friday.

The Northampton County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic dispute on Big Johns Store Road in Pleasant Hill around 7:45 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found a man had assaulted his wife during the dispute. Deputies tried to take the man into custody, but a confrontation ensued.

Deputies fired shots during the struggle and the man was killed.

The deputies were not injured in the shooting. Officials say they've been placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice while a shooting is investigated.

Sheriff Jack Smith contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to help investigate the incident.
