Durham carjacking serves as warning for parents
One parent called it a teachable moment.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Two children are safe and back with their mother after a carjacker stole the family vehicle - with them inside.

It happened Wednesday evening on Avondale Drive in Durham and ended on Green Street, south of Interstate 85, where law officers found the car - and the children.

The mother of the 5-year old girl and 1-year old boy thanked Durham Police for finding her children safe and sound.

Two children are safe and back with their mother after a carjacker stole the family vehicle - with them inside.

They were discovered a few miles away from the Ichiban restaurant in north Durham, where the family's SUV was taken.

As the family was leaving from the restaurant Wednesday night, a stolen white Volvo pulled up next to their SUV.

As the mother talked to a friend nearby, it took less than 15 seconds for the driver of the Volvo to get into the SUV.

Security footage showed people running to the car but it appears they could not get in the passenger door in time before the carjacker droves away.

The friend called 911.

"Someone just took my friend's car, and she has babies inside," she told the 911 dispatcher. "He was wearing a hat. My friend has two toddlers inside."

Police are still looking for the suspect or suspects who took the car.
