Gator eats dog in Florida
A woman says an alligator snatched her dog from a walking path

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- An alligator snatched and killed a family's dog on a park trail in Florida last weekend.

Station WFTS reports Sue Fortenbery went to walk with her 1-year-old Jack Russell named Bolt, when he got loose from his collar to chase after a rabbit.

The rabbit led Bolt through a hole in a fence into the waterway at the preserve.

That's when she says an alligator grabbed her pet.

"The screams is what you can't stop hearing, the yelping," she said.

Fortenbery was with her grandson. Fortenbery recalled, "He said, 'Memaw, the gator's got him!'"

Now Fortenbery says the openings in the fence are to blame. Some of the openings are about a foot wide, WFTS reported.

"If the fence wasn't open like this, he couldn't have gone through and the gator couldn't have got him," Fortenbery said.

Fortenbery said she's upset that the Pinellas County officials told her they won't remove the gator, but they told her they will monitor it.

As of now, the county does not consider this gator a nuisance because they have had no other complaints, and they were not given a good description what the gator looks like at the park to try and find it.
