FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- An SUV crashed into a convenience store Thursday night in Fayetteville, damaging the building.

When Fayetteville police officers got there shortly before 10 p.m., they discovered a robbery attempt may have initiated the incident.

It happened at the Skylite Fast Mart at 6047 Morganton.

Police said the driver of the SUV parked in front of the store and was approached by two men, one of whom pointed a gun at the driver.

As the driver attempted to escape by putting his vehicle in reverse, the SUV remained in drive and he drove into the building.

Police said one of the suspects then fired shots at the driver, who then grabbed his own gun and returned fire.

The suspects fled on foot.

The driver was not injured. Police are withholding his name.
