Raleigh man pleads guilty in pregnant girlfriend's murder

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Raleigh man charged in the April 2015 killing of his pregnant girlfriend has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and to attempted murder of an unborn child.

Daniel Joseph Steele, who was 25 at the time, pled guilty to the charges on Sept. 1 in front of Judge Paul Ridgeway.

Steele was arrested after the death of 25-year-old Kimberly Dianne Richardson, who was shot just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015, in the 3600 block of Sumner Boulevard.

Steele was arrested at his Snowcrest Drive home shortly after the shooting.

Richardson, who was six months pregnant, died at WakeMed the next morning from her injuries. Doctors were able to save her baby.

Steele received an active sentence of 240 to 300 months on the second-degree murder conviction and an active sentence of 157 to 201 months to run at the conclusion of the murder sentence on the attempted murder of unborn child charge.

The infant, a little girl named Lacy, is living with Richardson's parents and requires around-the-clock care.
