Thanksgiving travel winds down at RDU
RDU (WTVD) -- Sunday marks the last day of the Thanksgiving travel season. At RDU International Airport, Thanksgiving travelers are heading back home. So far, they say their trips were smooth.
Jeff Petrella and family are back in the Triangle after spending the holiday in New Jersey.
"It was great," Petrella says. "There were no delays at Newark, where we came from, and we got to the airport early. We're very grateful to get back safely and timely."
Duke students Lydia Barrios and Riley Cohen area back from Canada.
They have no complaints
"It was good," Barrios says. "No delays or cancellations. We got here on time."
Timing is everything when flying. We saw brief delays at the security check point as holiday travelers like David Murgatroyd and his family waited. They spent time in Triangle with relatives and are now flying home to Boston.
"We're checked in hopefully the long doesn't go too slowly so we should be OK."
AAA estimates 3.7 million people nationwide flew to their holiday destinations. The group says 50,000 of them are North Carolininas, which is a small increase from last year.
The price for flying went up 21 percent this year. The average round trip ticket for the top 40 domestic flights was around $200, according to AAA.
