KNIGHTDALE (WTVD) -- Knightdale police are issuing a crime alert about a man who posed as an AT&T sales representative and tried to scam a resident into giving away his personal information.

The police department posted the warning on Facebook after authorities it happened to a homeowner in the Emerald Point neighborhood on Stoney Fall Way, off Poole Road.

The suspect told the resident he could help him upgrade to fiber services.

He asked for the victim's social security number, driver's license number and other personal information.

Police said the suspect refused to give a business card when the resident declined the offer.

Officials said they are not sure if the suspect was an AT&T rep or not, but said residents should always be mindful of solicitors who come to the door.

Anyone going door-to-door is supposed to have a permit from the town before conducting business.
