1 dead after train hits SUV in Fayetteville
One person was killed and another seriously injured after a train hit an SUV in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (WTVD) -- One person is dead after a CSX train and an SUV collided in downtown Fayetteville early Sunday morning.

It happened on Hay Street at Winslow Street.

Authorities said a Honda SUV with four people inside became disabled on the railroad tracks. As they tried to free the vehicle from the tracks, the train approached.

The driver was identified as 51-year-old William Jacobs of Maxton. Authorities identified the three passengers as 50-year-old Amelia Chavis, of Pembroke, 50-year-old Penny Creech, of Pembroke, and 50-year-old Christopher Locklear, of Greensboro.

Creech and Chavis were able to escape the car. Locklear and Jacobs were not.

Locklear was killed and Jacobs is in critical condition at UNC Hospital.

Authorities said officers tried to help but it was too late.

The FPD traffic is working with representatives from CSX during the crash investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
