They call it Operation Spring Break

NASH COUNTY (WTVD) -- About 20 people, including a Southern Nash High School student, were arrested Monday as part of "Operation Spring Break," - a two-day drug roundup in Nash County.

Roughly 100 law enforcement personnel from agencies including the Nash County and Edgecombe County Sheriff's Offices, Tar River Regional Drug Task Force, the DEA, and Nashville and Wilson Police Departments participated in the sweep, which started early Monday morning.

Authorities said they expect to arrest a total of about 30 people suspected of trafficking drugs, guns and/or being involved in gangs.

"When you reduce these drugs it reduces your break-ins, with people going in and out of houses breaking in to steal for drugs, obviously the violence that's associated with it," Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said.

Law enforcement has been preparing for the operation for one year by investigating drug activity in the area.

"It's a community that's in the Western part of our county that's had a significant amount of drugs, a little bit of gang type of initiations, those of gang activity in this community for over the last year," Sheriff Stone said.

The operation will continue Tuesday.
